From Enough to Abundance: How Single Mom Physicians Can Build True Wealth
Dec 19, 2024As physician and executive moms, we often find ourselves juggling so much—our careers, families, finances, and self-care. The last thing we need is another lecture about money. But what if I told you that the way you think about your finances might be holding you back from the freedom and opportunities you deserve?
It’s easy to get comfortable, especially when you’ve worked hard to build a stable life. You’ve paid off debts, made significant career strides, and your family is secure. But is “comfortable” really where you want to stop?
A few years ago, I came across a quote that hit me like a ton of bricks. It was buried in a book full of charts, data, and financial analysis—things most of us gloss over. The quote was simple, but it changed the way I view success:
"Don’t assume because something is going well that you haven’t messed it up completely and are leaving a huge pile of money on the table."
Think about that. Just because you’re doing well doesn’t mean you’re maximizing your potential. And that doesn’t just apply to money—it applies to impact, growth, and personal fulfillment.
Are You Settling for 'Enough'?
Many of us strive for “enough.” Enough money to cover the bills, enough time to be with our families, and enough safety to feel secure. But here’s the harsh reality: life throws curveballs. Recessions happen. Medical emergencies arise. And suddenly, “enough” isn’t enough anymore.
As a physician and a single mom, I’ve seen so many colleagues fall into this trap. They reach a point where they feel comfortable and stop seeking opportunities. They think they’ve made it, and then—bam—life happens. And because they settled for “enough,” they’re suddenly scrambling to make ends meet.
That’s why we can’t afford to settle. Not in our careers, not in our finances, and not in our personal growth.
Think in Terms of Possibility, Not Just Comfort
Let me give you a real-life example. Over the last few years, I’ve been fortunate enough to pay off my student loans, provide for my family, and create financial security. But I didn’t stop there. I kept pushing, asking myself, “What more can I achieve? What’s possible?”
The result? More opportunities, more freedom, and more impact.
It’s not about obsessing over money. It’s about thinking bigger—beyond just surviving to actually thriving. Whether you’re a physician juggling patients or an executive leading teams, the mindset is the same. We have the power to create more for ourselves, our families, and our communities. But that only happens when we stop settling and start seeking possibilities.
Avoiding the Trap of 'Fake Success'
There’s a danger in getting too comfortable. It’s called fake success. You think you’ve made it—you’re financially secure, your career is stable—but you’ve stopped growing. And when you stop growing, you risk falling behind.
The world is constantly changing, and as moms in demanding careers, we have to adapt and evolve. We can’t rely on past success to carry us into the future. We need to actively look for new ways to grow, learn, and improve our financial and personal situations.
How to Start Building More Wealth and Freedom
So, what’s the next step? How do you move from “enough” to abundance?
-
Start by Asking the Right Questions – Instead of asking “Do I have enough?”, ask, “How much better can I be in my career? How many more people can I impact? What else is possible for me?”
-
Never Stop Learning – Whether it’s reading books, attending conferences, or finding a mentor, make it a habit to keep learning. The more you know, the more you can grow.
-
Take Action – Knowledge is power, but only if you use it. Look for ways to diversify your income, build passive streams of revenue, and set long-term goals that ensure your financial security—no matter what life throws at you.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Settle for Enough
As physician and executive moms, we’re already doing the impossible—balancing high-pressure careers with the demands of motherhood. But we don’t have to settle for “just enough.” We can create lives of abundance, impact, and true financial freedom, as long as we’re willing to think bigger and take action.
So, ask yourself: Have I gotten too comfortable? What else can I do to build a life of abundance?
If this resonated with you, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Drop a comment below or share this post with another mom who could use this reminder. And as always, I’m here to help you navigate the challenges of career, family, and finances—so you can achieve more than you ever thought possible.
